how is 1%2 = 1?

I understand 3%2 = 1, you fit a 2 into 3 and the remainder is 1. But I don't understand how to fit 2 into 1, so I could get the remainder 1. There is some small piece what I'm missing here..

My brain doesn't seem to want to wrap this up.. I understand that 2 can't go in 1, so the result is 0. But my logic is telling me that then the remainder is 2. Because there went nothing in the 1, the remainder must be 2. Or does the 2 get split, or what? I'm confused like a cow now.. I've been trying to figure this out for couple of days, but it's beating me every time. Am I overthinking it, is this actually very simple thing?

I think I understand now. You can't fit 2 in 1 so the result is 0. And the leftover (reminder) from 1, that is trying to be divided, is then 1. If this is the case.. i think my problem was that I was trying to fit something in. And when the numbers suddenly got so low, my mind was left with something that didn't fit in anywhere. (In the case with 1%2 and 0%2) I got this 2 hanging around, trying to fit in 1, but didn't. And I'm trying to figure out, where do I put it then?! But maybe, there is nothing to be fitted, it just needed to be divided - with a number.. which is.. something that doesn't need to be fitted anywhere? Because it's nothing? Nothing but an imaginary divider...
