As M Squared said, base system is Kali Linux, you must to know and work with that. Next you can practice with anothers distribution like Parrot or for Windows you can search Pengowin. All of this you can practice with virtual machines ISO, VDK, etc for Virtual Box, VM Ware, Qemu, etc

Take an introductory course explaining the basics (CEH can be pretty easy these days) and note the essential integral steps (even if you don't get the details enough); Once you have a mindmap about where to start, strengthen those areas that are more needed and used thought practice (may it be scripting, vulnerability scanning, forensics, etc...) You have to have a good grip on scripting, terminal commands, general security structures, and... pretty much most essential info to get into the competition. One side note though as others may have mentioned, practice only makes you stay in the game; The moment you quit dealing with real issues, you're game overed! Ask yourself: Am I confident enough with: — printing a list of thousands and searching them through? — commanding in bash/zsh terminal? — regular expressions? — ...
