Just learn JavaScript. They're not related at all, was simply a marketing scheme to get attention/popularity on one because of the popularity of the other. It worked. Unfortunately, it working meant this would be a question for the rest of our lives. :)

It's worth noting that Java is a very capable and used web programming language also, and it's far from being isolated to the desktop or applications/mobile/etc... We've been using Java in our browsers for decades now.
