No. Google Play Protect won't help you. Just use your brain and watch what you install.

Well that's not a quick easy answer.
Technically you can't get a virus on your
Android smartphone. But you can get
malware on your phone. Let me explain
the difference between the two. The
term virus is used for the old school stuff such as viruses, Trojans, and worms.
A virus is malicious software code that
copies itself across a computer network to
cause damage to the computer system.
Malware is the newer stuff. Think of
malware as the new kid on the block .
Also all viruses need to copy itself to
spread. But not all malware does.
Since I am here, I might of well answer
your other post about protecting yourself
against viruses. A good rule of thumb is
always download apps from the Play store.
Don't download apps from third parties
outside the play store.
Also check on that apps ratings and
reviews. Also have a good anti-virus app
such as Avast, 360 mobile security,
or AVG. They are good apps , they have
a high rating and reviews. If you suspect
that you have a virus, make sure your
anti-virus app is up to date, or download
the latest version. Also you could see
if you can find the malicious app, by
going to settings , Applications Manager
then go to downloads to see if you see
a app that doesn't belong there. Then
clean the cache and the uninstall the
offending app. If worse comes to worse,
then you will have to do a factory reset.
I recommend do a factory reset twice to
make sure the malware is 100% gone
completely. Also if you browse the web
beware of scareware and fake anti-virus messages . Those pop-up messages
that say you have 3 or more viruses
on your phone. And to click on the
button to clean your phone of viruses.
Or say you have won a
million dollars and click on the button
to collect your prize. They are very likely
to be malware.
In summary, you can't get a virus on
your phone, but can get malware on your
Android smartphone. But if you follow the
suggestions given , hopefully you should not get
malware on your phone.

Charan, every Linux distribution can get viruses.

Rick, you can deploy a meterpreter reverse shell on a phone if you wanted to. It grants complete root access.

Rick, Malware is a short name for Malicious Software which including viruses, Trojans, worms, ransomware and other malicious programs.
So it isn't different things.

You can't say sth like that. I saw a fake whatsapp developed by hackers in GooglePlay. Install any app carefully, Checkout it's permissions, Don't use non-GooglePlay apps if possible.

Google say that app, which downloaded from Google Play Store is fully protected, but I know a lot of cases when user had got viruses from Google Play Store app. I don't think that Android is protected from viruses. Anyway you may install a good anti virus on your phone.
