First and foremost, I will say they are both great in terms of the purpose you want to use either for. The purpose or your goal determines what to go for. But all the same they both seem to do the same job just that one is better used for an environment than the other. I prefer SVG because it doesn’t necessarily require any plugins or external scripting languages. And also great for pixel perfect display properties. But it’s still your choice and what works for you desired project. Like @Brains said he prefers canvas.
