How to turn education into working knowledge, particularly Javascript

This will be the second time around that I have completed the HTML, CSS, and JavaScript courses. I am comfortable in the knowledge that I have learned but I have no idea how to implement it. The closest helpful thing that I have found is a tutorial on how to make a calculator. The skills I have learned are useless without the knowledge of how to use them and what to use them on. Help, advice, links, suggestions?

So you hook it up to a database of cat names or just an array of them. Then when someone wants to name their cat the site can generate a good cat name for them.

Doing what? Cats are cool but I can make an entire cat pic site by just using HTML and CSS... How is Javascript helpful, other than to make a button or something?

Also a calculator where people put their cats weight and it tells them if their cat is overweight would be good cuz a lot of cats are overweight. Maybe add a quiz about different kinds of cats. I just thought too a cat years calculator! So they put human years and it outputs the cat years and vice verse so maybe depending on what radio button is pressed. Start off with this kind of stuff and then go from there. It doesn’t have to be cat but I like cats cuz I just got one and his name is Alfred O’Malley.

I was thinking of making a searchable database of every business in town and if they're hiring or not.. Its a small town but is that too big of a first project?
