I do one way is to read the statement and copy down the example run it. After make changes from the sub section you read. Over time youll get a better understanding of what the code is actually doing behind the scenes.

9 of my almost 70 languages came from books. The rest were learned reading existing code, compiler source, or online documentation. The last book I read was first edition C manual stored on my Unix distribution back in the late 70's.
