Is programming truly a “language”? Is it something that should be an option at school to learn as a second language?

I've heard rumors of schools allowing a programming language as a second language requirement. But, haven't ever gotten confirmation on it.

Personally, I don't think it should be. I'd rather have a required computer education class that teaches an overview to apps like video editing, word processing, spreadsheets, and minor programming so everyone was exposed to the possibilities of computers.

In my son's regional high school, some of the kids came without any real practical knowledge of anything, but word processing. His elementary education included what I suggested above.

The main point of programming languages is for humans to communicate and give instructions to computers. While it is important to learn programming languages, and I full support the notion of introducing programming languages to students in schools, labelling it as a second language would be akin to telling someone you "speak math".

It is indeed a language, but just to communicate with a machine, not a person. Now if learning programming language should be standard class in a school, is another topic wich has been discussed extensively in sololearn
