What language would you recommend to a beginner as their first?

I think Python is probably one of the easiest to learn but it is also one of the less useful languages in the professional world. Would you recommend a beginner start with Python and then learn Java or C++? Or, would you recommend they persevere with a more complicated language? What are your opinions and why? I personally think Python is a good intro to the fundamental concepts and a good stepping stone to take on the way to learning a more complicated language.

This would all depend on the ultimate end goal for capabilities and projects as well as the new programmer's comprehension of the scripting/coding methodology and concepts.
