What is the best description of a Java Applet?

I have been learning a good deal of Java for developing Android mobile applications, but I've also heard the term Applet. I'm curious what would be the best way to describe a Java applet?

app run by the browser without main method.
nowadays they aren't that common like in the past. for example chrome from v.40 don't support applet.
