Why to use <span> if we can use <font color="?">

font tag is not supported in html5

span is a container it's not a styling tag..
and we don't use span instead of font tag..

whereas, the font tag has been deprecated from HTML5.. as in said that all stylings are to be done separately in css.. either inline or external file of CSS linked to the html or internally placed in html by using <style> tag
