it's getting a little hairy following the tutorials from this point. help out please.

Try to complete the HTML course first.
The document is the object that helps you to work with the page where you declared your script on with: <script src='script_filename.js'/>.

It's a very long argument, I can type hundreds of lines explaining it, that's why it's an entire chapter of the JS course.
