How does one start with writing an Android app?

Question

I pretty much want to know the basics plus touchscreen interaction; from what I know about Java, I get the feeling that I'd need to import some class for interactive touch and I really have no idea how you'd do anything for touch considering the extreme varieties in display size and just the fact that Java doesn't seem to be a touchscreen friendly language (if you get my gist.)
