No learning to write programs is not pointless. Understanding error handling helps you fix problems with your own computer. It can also help when filling out a crash report.

Furthermore, although I never intended to become a programmer it is sure helpful to list on a CV. As It has a high level of demand, being able to help with IT is a advantage to the organisation.
