I believe the Self Learner badge is awarded when you get 5 upvotes on an answer/reply/post in your own question. Take for example; If you got 5 upvotes on your reply here saying Thanks. Note: Your own votes do no count toward this badge

Self learning is learning on your own (without any real life teacher). An example of self learning is SoloLearn or any other app/website where you learn without any person explaining stuff right next to you. And when somebody tells you to answer your own question, they want you to think as much as you can, because problems are sometimes pretty easy and can be solved easily with some common sense. And you remember the thing better when you do this, than when somebody tells you the solution.
