How do you get started with a real life programming project?

I would like to start a project in my spare time but I don't know where to start? I would love to start a project of my own with something I'm really interested in but how do you come up with ideas and/or get involved in projects? Do people still create portfolios of their work?

I would suggest you take up a project that you use every day if you don't get any ideas. Don't think that somebody had already implemented it. If you are to develop it, how are you going to do it? If you start developing, you will get all sorts of new ideas. Had Google thought that yahoo mail was already present and why should I develop a new service we would have missed a wonderful Gmail service. All the best!
