Recommender engines are definitely among trending projects. Same goes for client segmentation algorithms, fraud/fault detection and future value predictors.
Of another field, the whole NLP batch - mood/sentiment analysis, chatbots, topic detection nd such.
Finally, optical recognition/computer visionand its applications.
