Honestly, a lot depends where you work. What I do is get onto job search websites and look up the job positions at various places. In the listing it usually has the requirements and what they're expecting from the person they'll hire, so you know exactly what the market is currently seeking and posting for. Write down all of the skills you see listed and then go teach yourself those skills. You'll become really good over time by doing that and earn a really good education that doesn't cost much.

By the way, when somewhere says that it requires a degree, I don't let that slow me down. If you learn the skills and hone them, you don't need a piece of paper to represent you because you can represent yourself. Put a lot of time and focus into communication and maybe even psychology also. You can talk yourself in and out of situations very quickly regardless of what skills you have or not. If you hone your communication skills, you can properly represent yourself to potential employers and get yourself in there to prove yourself. Remember they're all humans (for now :D ) which works to your advantage.
Best of luck to you!
