Secure telnet

Question

Since the old telnet internet utility has become obsolete due to security reasons, what could be a possible substituent platform to try out this same feature of logging onto a remote computer system and working on it?

Not too comfortable with the original utility's safety, but wanted to see how it works nonetheless...😕
