hello I am 40 and just getting started with coding. is it too late to start

@nokidding... I'm 42 and have been fortunate enough to have been doing this professionally for the past 22 years.

It has more to do with your aptitude for learning, commitment to learn, and ultimately, your desire to learn at your age.

Knowing how my mind works and the resources available today that weren't available over the past two decades , I have no doubt that I would have learned at a much more rapid pace at 42 today than I did at 19 or 20. I also think I'm much smarter now than I was in college. However, I'm not sure if that's due to maturity or if daily programming has kept my mind sharp.

i am 53 years old, in june 2017 i started to learn c++ coding here at sololearn, have a look at my codes and tell me it didn't work 👍😉

@ 1337 H4x0r, you are not too young, you just have to read the stuff of the programming languages in the right way, sometimes more then once, if you need longer time to manage the logic behind a language, its ok, start to read the lesson again, play arround with the codes of that lesson, try something new with that codes, do all what help you to learn, if you didn't find a way to solve a problem, you may ask in sololearn, all people here are trying to help you 👍😉

Sounds like a good time to start! I'm 33 now - started learning python about 3 years ago. Now I'm brushing up on html/css and trying to learn Javascript. In the future I am hoping to get work doing this stuff.

I would say a few things are important that really aid in learning:
- be part of a community of coders. I had another community I was a part of learning Python. I learned A LOT and then started to help others. Very very good way to learn and then you're also not alone.
- make something. Don't just learn the courses. Do something with the knowledge. The first thing I ever made in Python was a simple command line type calculator for making it easy to count yen. Super simple when I think about it now, but at the time it was still fresh. I used it a lot!
- code challenges are great. They exist here and elsewhere.

I think it's important to think about what you want to use it for. Some programming languages are better suited for certain things. For example if you wanted to learn how to make an iOS app, you should learn Swift. If you want to make web apps or web pages you should learn html, css, and javascript. If you want to play around with little robots in your living room, python likely works great.

*edit: sorry I noticed that this has an "html5" tag. The above paragraph may be useless, but the point is that you can aim your learning at something particular. However, many programming concepts are cross-language.

It’s never too late and it’s never too early. There is no reason why you could not. You want to do it, right? If so, then why not? You’ve got an average 48 years according to the average male lifespan. So, why not? That looks like enough time to me.

i am over 40. when i think that it is too late for coding, i go to sleep, and continue it in the morning :)

@Tamaslud... LOL... Hilarious answer! I happen to frequently code late into the night and have to force myself to stop to insure I get at least 4 hours of sleep.

When I was younger, it was common for me to code through the night and just get on with my day until the next evening when I would catch up on my sleep during normal sleep hours. That would happen a couple times a week until my mid 30s when my mind was starting to not do so well from the lack of sleep.

Not at all, you've picked the best time for that, there are so many sources where you can learn from, a lot of free training; videos, tutorials, etc
Start with some basic project, web projects are cool to learn because are easy to debug and quickly you see the results of your code
Don't give up! Coding requires curiosity and constancy

yes too late. When you are 40, life is over more or less.
Buy a rocking chair, place it near the the window and watch other peoples live. Dont move too much. And let your brain rest after more than 40 years hard work.
