Arduino is not n MCU.
Arduino is a programming framework for a limited range of microcontrollers.
Actually it started with "Wiring": a project by Hernando Barragan to create an open-source programming framework for AVR microcontrollers.
At that time, Massimo Banzi & co. were using PIC microcontrollers which technically, cannot be used for open source hardware.
The whole "Arduino Language" is actually taken from Wiring and adapted for another AVR microcontroller.
