If you aren't proficient at programming yet, you can look at WordPress with WooCommerce or Magento as ecommerce solutions with many plugins and themes to work with.

It would still probably be quicker to start again with a framework that supports e-commerce. You will need to use a secure system, building one yourself won't be secure.

If you don't want to discontinue with your current design path, use a third party e-commerce library with good security.

Right. If it's an assignment they probably don't want you to use a third-party library. Normally they specify as part of the assignment.
