convert from symbol to character

&#9812-♟ -> gives a chess piece of a different color when inside a div

I want to know if the piece on the square being attacked is of the same color of the attack. i want to compare the numbers [9817] to decide whether the chess piece is black/white (to set the rules for the pieces)but i can't convert it to a string or an array. help!

that was supposed to be a symbols and number but the website also converted it to chess pieces. illadd space # & 9 8 1 7
