How practical are ACM questions?

How practical are ACM questions? I mean should those who work in the industry be the master of solving that kind of questions? is it really necessary? i know that a skilled developer should already be aware of some concepts and actually be able to write a code which compiles in the shortest time possible. but still some ACM questions seems to be so conceptual and not practical. what do you think? any suggestions for mastering programming skills for future jobs would be appreciated as well.
