Is it possible to become a good programmer by learning only one language?

My first wife programmed Cobol her entire working career. It is the only language she knows. She is an expert in it. These days companies pay big bucks for people that know it.

Most of my working career was coding C++. While I know a bunch of languages, I could have easily only known that one and had work.
