That depends... The social sites usually have a combination of codes in different languages.... for the betterment of security, usability, speed of something else..

Games use languages like C or C++ for speed reasons.
For social media at the beginning the languages like php, python because at that step speed is not an issue.
But when user start growing quicky you start facing speed problem so you have to think on how rewrite some of you code in another languages like C++.
