About 20 years ago. I had always enjoyed puzzles, pattern recognition, thinking, etc... The internet was starting to really boom in the 90s, and there were these text adventure games online at the time, which I enjoyed playing. As most gamers, I thought I could have done so much better than the one I was playing, so I set off to create my own instead. I "hired" a programmer to help, but he was lazy so I ended up firing him. As a result, I decided that if you wanted something done, you should learn how to do it yourself so you don't have to rely upon others. That's when I bought Sam's Teach Yourself C++ in 21 Days and began reading. Due to my true nature in this world, I immediately fell in love with programming and have recognized it as my passion since then. It's something that I've always done for fun and only fairly recently decided to make money from it. You know something is your passion when you don't have to be paid even a dime to do what you do.
