I can give you some of the applications of both java and python but the choice of your programming language does not depend on your branch but the type of project you want to use it for.

For competitive programming, both the languages have their merits and demerits. Java has a better runtimethan python and is often a good choice for competitive programming if your contest has the same runtime for all problems. But python reduces amount of code to be written and often simplifies it very much and is great for language independent contests like those organized on HackerRank and HackerEarth.

If you want to develop Android applications, you will have to use Java which is most widely used in Android development.

For desktop applications both are equally used thought nowadays Python is preferred due to its simplicity and wide variety of modules and frameworks.

Python is also widely used in the fields of data analysis, web development, Internet of Things and robotics.

Python nowadays powers many important websites like Facebook, YouTube, Dropbox and and many others.

Python has not been widely used in game development yet, though in future it might be. Java is still widely used in game development. Many famous games like Minecraft is entirely written in Java using LWJGL (Light Weight Java Game Library). Many modern game engines nowadays use C++/C# which are more similar to Java than Python. The famous Unity game engine uses Boo, a python based scripting language but most developers use the C# Unity scripting.
