Think HTML but for any kind of data. If you want to send your shopping list to another computer it might not know how to read it, because you can only send text and text is unstructured. For example maybe you sent "milk|eggs|bread" and the other computer does not understand that each item is seperated by a "|", because why should it, you are sending your list in a format that nobody else uses. XML is a standard way of structuring data and everybody agrees on it and you can use it to send your shopping list to another computer so it will understand it.
