I'm a big fan of open source and as such, I will usually release sources of development that I do in my free time, or help out with open source projects freely.

With that said, if I build an application for a company or a person as work, I expect to be paid.

I guess so but by that logic I could also say you express yourself when engineering a building and that's a paid job. The bottom of the line is that programming takes time and work, it also makes other people money so there is no way I would program for somebody that is making money from my work if I'm not getting paid

Programming jobs are expected to rise dramatically in the next few years, and because of the shortage of good coders, I think that means good salaries. Correct me if I'm wrong.
