Netbeans is also completely free, it's distributed by Oracle, and there are different versions from the lightest with only the Java development essentials, to the heaviest with even server setups for a more serious and complete approach, which is great for regular computers and laptops, and very straightforward on beginners. IntelliJ is very intuitive, and there a "community version" for free (but of course not as completed ad the payed version) that you could try out, with everything related to Java, Scala and Android on the same free package. (They are not paying me, but they should lol).

Netbeans, Eclipse, IntelliJ. @Andreas K IntelliJ is free as well, only if you want some special functions you can buy the commercial edition if you want to.

Most prefer Eclipse which is free. By using commercial products it should be IntelliJ
