Proper way in html5 to use this tag is <br>.
</br> was never be valid form, and <br/> was supported until html5 to give habits to coders to be more xhml (xml based -- xml is less permissive than html, and require slash at end of self-closed tags) compliant, but xhtml branch was abandonned with outcome of html5 ^^
