Do you think it is possible to learn a language by yourself with a platform like this?

Yes. I learned BASIC alone as a kid. I learned some C and C++ and started but quit Java years back. You can learn if you put in the time, read books, and write code. You don't need SL actually. What SL does is make learning way easier because you have thousands of people learning your language to share knowledge and you learn best by teaching. SL lessons are a crash course that saves you lots of reading and gets you up to date so you can start your journey. SL + Local Library + Stack Overflow (and other sites) are a great combo. You just won't have the papers you'd get from schooling. However, one can build a portfolio.
