How to bring my programming skills to the next level.

Question

After learning fundamentals of java and being capable of writing functional programs, how can I really bring my skills to the next level? At my university, I am currently taking a class on Data Structures and Algorithms. Other than grasping those concepts, what else should I be focusing on in order to really improve my skills as a programmer?

Practice, learn more about software engineering (clean code, DRY, solid principles, etc), practice, more practice, ask for more experiences programmers to review your code, practice.
