I personally hate NetBeans. But also Eclipse.
If you don't use special tools you don't even need a real ide, you Can simply use notepad++ on Windows or sublime on Linux.
There is actually no general answer. I personally prefer I IntelliJ Idea
But beginners often start with eclipse. Has most of the features you need and still relatively easy to understand. In the beginning it will be a One-click exploring game but there will be one day (approximately after 1 month usage) when you will master your Ide

thanks Arsal Ali. But I find eclipse a little tough to understand compared to netbeans. creating a class by giving a lot of specifications just to type and run a simple code..

I use Android Studio which is a souped up version of IntelliJ IDE. It makes coding a lot more streamlined IMO.
You don't have to make Android applications while using it, but gives you the tools needed if you ever desire.

Yeah it is but I absolutely hate NetBeans code style. I mean.. You have 4 or 5 gui elements and BAM 200 lines of useless code. This made me Shit bricks.
I use also Android Studio. The name says it, you develop apps for Android devices with it, but you can also develop Java applications with it ease
