[Smartwatch programming] Does it work with any smartwatch?

I think about buying a smartwatch and programming it as gift.
Does someone have experience?

in the new version of Processing for Android there is the posdibility to program watch faces

i didn't try it yet but so far processing for android was way less overwhelming than android studio.
