Python. PHP for web development because it's just much easier to use with html and mysql. But python is more popular for its usage. It's multi purpose language that you can use to make games and data-analysis. Windows, Android and IOS both have some kind of tools to build softwares with python. Also pythons syntax is one of the reasons. It's better to understand when writing long codes. Then there's java which i haven't heard that many would use for the server side. You need to install all right java versions. Python is already installed on many machines.

According to this article, I'd say Toni is right: Programming languages used in most popular websites: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Programming_languages_used_in_most_popular_websites

PHP can't run out of model just yet. php works easily with alot of web technology like javascript and html5, bootstrap, etc.. you only need to write your codes and connect to database/server if you will be requiring any data from It. to host such sites is as easy as launching your first website. But hosting a python website is much difficult and expensive given that it's not yet widespread for web development. many host don't offer it as easy as they offer Apache server. plus you will need alot of framework like flask Django and rest, which you need not bother about with PHP.

well I am PHP and python, but I prefer to use python for apps, software's, scrapping the web, pentesting, science, am a physicist so python is great for simulations. python has many useful areas that aren't web based so why should I necessarily replace it for the one thing PHP does?

While Toni is right I would like to also point out here that majority of the big websites like Google that has python running is usually for the sake of their web crawlers or robots. it's easier to scrap the net with python and do alot of data work, and AI work. So someppl sites may consist of some percent of Python doesn't mean it was used for the web back end but the web service tool, like the crawler.

for your sake I wish that could be true. the reason people love python is because of its platform independence and free and open source license. but a website is already platform independent, so if python should succeed else where I strongly agree. but in web development? not above php

I am not sure what you mean. Python is better as a security testing language known as pentest, and this because python is great at all AI stuffs and data handling. but I really don't know about using python to set web security actually.
