Coding for Start-Up

I am working on refining my coding skills so I can begin developing customer software as a product. I have a pretty solid base on web design, but don't really know where to start with software. Should I go C++ or Java? How about Python and Ruby? I want to build first: A custom history map that can work on a desktop or mobile device and pulls from Wikipedia

A custom history map that works on both desktop and mobile. Of the ones you listed Java would be pretty decent. Considering that you can make a desktop application using Javafx and just create an Android app too which might encourage you to learn Kotlin down the line. Of course, if you wanted your stuff on IOS then you're going to have to pick up Swift. To conclude, I think Java will fit your needs well... desktop application ✔ mobile application ✔

Kotlin is another programming language. Don't worry about it now though. Go ahead and mess around with Java and do whatever. Eventually, you'll come around to it.
