What kind of text editor should I use for code?

Should I just use notepad for code?

Try notepad++ , it's simple, but will help you sometimes. You can use SublimeText too, its pretty cool.

To be honest with you, I will recommend the normal notepad (yes notepad). This is because most text editors usually have this auto fill feature which I don't think is helpful . I started with dream weaver but I had to stop because I didn't even know how to declare the DOCTYPE.You can start with normal notepad then switch to another editor, preferably sublime 3

yep, notepad ++ if windows, if using Linux stick to vi editor
