Javascript and PHP have been one of the most and famous programming languages in 2017, but that too, in web programming. Java has been in the business for a longer time than any other programming language. alike Python, java is also a multi purpose programming language although, at some cases python might be prefered. Java is being used and embedded in more than 3 billion devices. Java can be used for mobile programming, desktop, serverlets , Applets etc... But still depends which type of programming you wish to learn and for what purpose.Moreover, Java is platform independent, meaning, you write code once and can use it on any machine as long as the machine has a JVM.
