how can I get a favicon to work on internet explorer?

Most webservers handle favicons, nust by having a favicon.ico in the root directory of the website. i tested this with IIS 7, xampp and wamp

I understan lol, but in case someone else apart from me intends to see the webpage through IE or edge, is there anyway to actually get the favicon to work?
