In the most basic sense, think of an API as a group of tools which help a programmer achieve their goal much easier (i.e. in most cases, shorten the amount of code or work you have to put in).

an api is just an interface or method of getting data from one place to another.

you can built apis to get data from other people or to use internally. or you could get data from someone else via their api.

an api can send data in many different formats like json, xml, etc.

you can also insert update or delete data in a remote location via an api if it allows.
