As both are official languages for android development you can use either of them.Whichever you feel easy and comfortable. Although Kotlin is new but is easier than java for learning.

Well, I personaly prefer Java, but at compile time kotlin is much faster than java, tough. And to be honest Kotlin was created to be better than Java.

Itiel Dan Java is similar to Kotlin but is a more powerful coding language that can be used for anything, java was built mostly for web app development that can be ran anywhere

if that is the case I will suggest that you should go for python and then java. as they hold a big chunk of market and not android specific languages only. but have Kotlin in your side.

Kotlin helps you to reduce boilerplate codes which you can't get rid of them in java. and much like java the Kotlin is multiPlatform language.
