python error - declaring variables

Question

i'm using the geany interpreter and it often says that some functions need declaring even though they don't

for instances
f.read()

even though i've declared the variable f, it says that read is a variable and also needs declared.

how can i fix this?

Thank you. At the moment i'm going back to basics and just learning the syntax but once i start writting code again, i'll post if the same problem as before occurs
