My friend is a web developer by trade. In terms of languages, he knows HTML, CSS, JavaScript/jQuery and PHP and uses all of these in his work - his PHP knowledge often allows him to take jobs which are too complex for other developers. There are 'niches' within web development too, e.g. some developers work with a particular CMS such as WordPress, and some even more specialised, like developers who work mainly with the Genesis framework for WordPress (my friend is one of these!).
