How do you properly configure the php mail() function?

Question

I successfully had a php mail function set up with no errors when hosted, but it doesn't deliver the emails. FYI this is a live host not xamp.
Also i was unable to attach a file below, if someone will be kind enough to walk me through it

Have you checked your trash or spam in your mail ???

Yea i did
