What's the brain food for developing a game engine

Hi there! I believe there are game experts here, that's why i decided to pose this question. i was wondering cuz i wanna try it out, what's the labour, knowledge and resources needed to create a game engine of any complexity. if you got advanced knowledge, I'll love to here it, likewise basic knowledge too will really give me a head start. thank you in advance.
