Server side happens on the server. PHP is an example of this because the web server executes all the PHP code and sends the client the resulting HTML. The client doesn't need to do anything with this approach.

Client side scripting happens on the client. JavaScript frameworks such as Angular and React are examples of this. The framework figures out what the page should look like in the users browser and does all the heavy lifting. In theory the server wouldn't need to do anything other than serve up the static files for this approach.
