Difference between programming languages and scripting languages?

scripting language are used in writing codes which operate on another software while programming language are used to writes codes which can stand by themselves ( JavaScript executes on a browser , yah not independent though nowadays it evolved to be considered programming language as we see it on desktop) c/c++ do produce independent code which just run on a PC and not part of other software
