How did programming come into existence? How machines understand whatever we input?

We have known how to write codes and how to get output but who started it and how it all began is the big question, do we have anyone who can answer it completely?

If you are looking for the first machine to accept input from humans process it and produce something you have to go back to the jacquard loom in 1801 where punch cards were used to lift or block needles from rising producing different weave patterns.
